Who we are

MotorFacts helps UK drivers make confident decisions when buying or selling a used car by presenting key history data in plain English. You will see this approach across our vehicle history checks, sample reports and buyer guidance.

The site is operated by Data Reach Ltd, registered in England and Wales, and is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office.

Why we started

You should not need trade access to understand a car's past. Our mission is to turn complex records into straightforward answers you can use right now.

Too many motorists encounter incomplete or confusing reports. Our team's background covers automotive data handling, product engineering and compliance, so we designed a process that emphasises accuracy, transparency and accountability.

How our checks work

Every report follows the same path, from the registration you enter to the finished read in your inbox. Key sections are timestamped so you can see when they were last refreshed, and if a provider is temporarily unavailable we say so and retry rather than guess.

  1. Smart lookup: enter a registration; we validate it and prepare targeted queries.
  2. Relevant data calls: we request records from trusted sources and partner datasets where available.
  3. Consistency checks: we look for anomalies, such as date conflicts or improbable mileage jumps.
  4. Readable grouping: results are grouped with short explanations and clear status indicators.
  5. Delivery: your report is emailed and viewable online, and we resend on request if email filtering gets in the way.

What's included

What a report does cover, when the underlying records are available.

  • Core vehicle identity and key registration markers.
  • History indicators where available, including write-off categories, mileage patterns and plate changes.
  • Plain-English context, so you understand what each finding means.

What isn't included

And what it does not, either because it is not ours to publish or because it cannot be verified. If something cannot be retrieved at the time you check, we show that status rather than guess, which saves you time and avoids misinterpretation.

  • Valuations or subjective opinions.
  • Personal data about previous keepers.
  • Unverifiable information, or anything outside data-sharing rules.

Editorial standards

Our guides and articles are held to the same standard as the reports.

  • Author attribution: articles and guides include named authors and publish dates.
  • Fact checking: content is reviewed for accuracy and updated when standards or data sources change.
  • Plain English: we avoid jargon, and where a technical term is needed we explain it.
  • Change log: key pages carry a "last updated" date for transparency.

Security and privacy

We collect only what a report needs, and protect it.

  • Encrypted connections: the site is served over HTTPS end to end.
  • Trusted payments: card processing is handled by a reputable gateway, and we do not store card numbers.
  • Data minimisation: we collect only what is needed to deliver your report and support you.
  • Rights respected: you can request a copy of your data, or ask us to remove it when it is no longer needed.

What you can expect from us

A few promises that shape everything above.

  • Plain English: explanations you can act on, not just raw fields.
  • Transparency: we show what we found, and what we could not fetch.
  • Timely delivery: reports are issued promptly, and if email fails we resend.
  • Human support: real people answering within UK working hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vehicle history check and why do I need one?

A history check gathers what the records hold about a specific car: its MOT results and recorded mileage, and where available markers such as write-off categories, plate changes and outstanding finance, so you can spot a problem before you buy. It reads the paperwork, not the metal: it is not a mechanical inspection and does not replace one.

How current is the information in my MotorFacts report?

Each section is timestamped with when it was last refreshed. The data is requested from official and partner sources at the moment you run the check; MOT history comes from the DVSA and is usually current to within a day or two of the most recent test.

Is this an alternative to an HPI check?

"HPI" is a brand name for a type of provenance check. We are an independent provider offering the same kinds of history indicators, with finance, theft and write-off searched in the paid report. Exactly which registers are searched can differ between providers, so we always list what a report did and did not cover.

Will a vehicle check show if a car has been written off (Category S or N)?

Where the insurance write-off register returns a record, yes, including the category, such as S or N. If no record is returned at the time of your check we show that status plainly; a "nothing found" result is not the same as a guarantee the car was never written off.

Can you tell me if there is outstanding finance?

Outstanding finance is part of the paid report, searched against the finance register. Where a record is returned it is shown; where nothing is returned we say so. Because the register only reflects what lenders have filed, a "nothing found" result cannot guarantee that no finance exists.

Do you cover private plate changes?

Where the record shows previous registration marks, yes: changes of number plate appear in the vehicle's history, so you can see whether a car has been re-plated.

Do you store my card details?

No. Card payments are handled by a reputable payment gateway, and we never see or store your full card number.

What if my report email doesn't arrive?

Check your spam or junk folder first, as filtering sometimes delays delivery. You can also open the report online from your order at any time, and we will resend it on request.

Is my personal data safe?

We collect only what is needed to deliver your report and support you, serve the site over HTTPS, and do not sell your data. You can ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to delete it once it is no longer needed. Our full approach is set out in the Privacy Policy.

Do you offer refunds?

Because a report is delivered immediately, at checkout you agree to us starting straight away and waive the usual cancellation period. If a report did not deliver, or something went wrong on our side, contact us and we will put it right. The full position is in our Terms.
